Kalonzo Accuses Ruto Regime of Seeking Ways to ‘Escape’ 2027 Elections

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused President William Ruto’s administration of allegedly seeking ways to interfere with or avoid the 2027 General Election, warning that Kenyans will not allow any attempts to undermine the democratic process.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused President William Ruto’s administration of allegedly seeking ways to interfere with or avoid the 2027 General Election, warning that Kenyans will not allow any attempts to undermine the democratic process.

Speaking during a church service in Machakos County, Kalonzo linked his claims to the recent unrest witnessed during the Linda Mwananchi political tour in Homa Bay County. He condemned the violence reported during the political activities, accusing the government of allowing political opponents and journalists to be targeted.

According to Kalonzo, supporters of the Linda Mwananchi movement were attacked and journalists covering the events had their equipment destroyed. He described the perpetrators as “militias” rather than ordinary groups of youths, arguing that the situation could push the country towards instability.

The former Vice President further called on Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo to resign, arguing that the security situation in the country requires urgent attention. Kalonzo noted that there were about 358 days remaining before the scheduled 2027 elections and urged the government to take responsibility for ensuring peace and security.

“Ruto regime is looking on ways to escape elections but Kenyans won’t allow,” Kalonzo said, while warning President Ruto against what he described as a political “run down.”

Kalonzo argued that President Ruto, as Head of State, bears the primary responsibility for maintaining security and protecting the rights of Kenyans. He said the country should not reach a point where citizens are prevented from freely choosing their leaders through democratic elections.

He also urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure that the 2027 elections are credible, secure and protected from manipulation. According to Kalonzo, electoral technology and systems should be transparent enough to guarantee public confidence in the outcome.

The Wiper leader also renewed his opposition to the proposed involvement of Smartmatic as an election technology service provider. He insisted that Kenya must establish an electoral system that can withstand scrutiny both locally and internationally.

“The world is watching,” Kalonzo said, maintaining that Kenyans must be allowed to elect their leaders without what he termed “state capture.”

His comments come as political activity continues to intensify across the country ahead of the 2027 General Election. The United Opposition and other political movements have increased grassroots mobilisation, with leaders holding rallies and public engagements in different counties.

The latest controversy follows chaotic scenes in Homa Bay during the Linda Mwananchi tour, where political activities were disrupted and journalists were reportedly assaulted. The Kenya Editors Guild has also condemned the alleged attack on journalists covering the events, further raising concerns over the safety of media workers during political activities.

Kalonzo’s remarks are likely to intensify the political debate over the preparedness of the country for the 2027 elections and the government’s responsibility to guarantee a peaceful campaign and voting environment.

With political parties and movements already positioning themselves for the next presidential contest, the Wiper leader has urged Kenyans and electoral authorities to remain vigilant and protect the country’s democratic institutions.

The 2027 General Election is expected to be a major political contest, and Kalonzo’s latest accusations add to growing opposition pressure on the Ruto administration over security, electoral preparedness and political freedoms.
