Ruto Unveils Sh30 Billion Mega Plan to Expand Bomas of Kenya with Hotels, Mall and Arena

The government has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform the Bomas of Kenya into one of Africa’s premier convention and entertainment centres through a Sh30 billion expansion project that will introduce new hospitality, commercial, and recreational facilities.
President William Ruto said the redevelopment of Bomas of Kenya will go beyond constructing a world-class convention centre, with plans already in place to build two hotels, a shopping mall, and a modern indoor arena once the current phase of construction is complete.
According to the President, the expansion is intended to position Kenya as a leading destination for international conferences, exhibitions, concerts, and business events while supporting the country’s growing tourism industry.
The redevelopment will significantly increase the capacity of the Bomas complex, enabling it to host multiple large-scale events simultaneously. Government officials believe the investment will reduce the need for Kenya to rely on foreign venues for major regional and international gatherings.
Beyond enhancing conference tourism, the Bomas of Kenya project is expected to generate thousands of jobs during both construction and operation. Opportunities are anticipated in sectors such as hospitality, retail, transport, security, event management, and maintenance, providing a boost to the local economy.
Ruto said the project reflects the government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that delivers long-term economic benefits. He noted that modern convention facilities play a vital role in attracting international investors, multinational organizations, and tourists who contribute significantly to economic growth.
The President also challenged contractors to maintain high construction standards and complete the project within the agreed timelines, emphasizing that timely delivery will allow subsequent phases of the development to begin without delay.
The additional hotels are expected to provide accommodation for delegates attending conferences and exhibitions, while the shopping mall will offer retail, dining, and leisure facilities for visitors. The planned arena will serve as a venue for sporting competitions, concerts, cultural festivals, and other major public events.
Government officials say the integrated development is designed to make the Bomas complex a one-stop destination where visitors can attend meetings, access accommodation, shop, and enjoy entertainment without leaving the facility.
The redevelopment forms part of Kenya’s broader strategy to strengthen conference tourism, a sector that continues to contribute significantly to the country’s economy. Authorities believe a modern convention hub will improve Kenya’s competitiveness against other regional destinations seeking to attract international meetings and exhibitions.
