Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has praised the signing of the Washington Accords for Peace between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), calling it a historic milestone that signals a new era of stability and shared prosperity in the Great Lakes region
The agreement, signed in Washington by Presidents Paul Kagame and Félix Tshisekedi and witnessed by U.S. President Donald Trump, establishes a permanent ceasefire, outlines the disarmament of armed groups, guarantees the safe return of refugees, and lays the groundwork for deeper economic cooperation
Kenyatta, who attended the ceremony, said the pact builds on years of regional diplomacy including the Nairobi and Luanda peace processes aimed at ending decades of violence

“The Washington Accords end decades of conflict by establishing a permanent ceasefire, disarming rebel groups, enabling the return of refugees, and providing a framework for economic growth,” Kenyatta said in a statement
“This addresses one of the world’s deadliest conflicts, which has claimed more than 10 million lives”
He lauded Presidents Kagame and Tshisekedi for choosing dialogue and cooperation, and acknowledged President Trump and the United States for supporting the peace initiative and providing a platform for the negotiations

Kenyatta noted that the accords bring renewed hope to millions affected by conflict and create an unprecedented opportunity for long-term peace, security, and development across the region
“The agreement paves the way for renewed cooperation between Rwanda and the DRC, giving millions hope for lasting peace after decades of turmoil,” he added
