‘Tunataka Power!’: Oburu Oginga’s Struggles Ignite Social Media Storm

But what was meant to be a seamless transition within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has instead sparked ridicule, online satire, and an unexpected meme frenzy

When iconic leaders exit the stage, history often demands that their successors rise swiftly, steady the faithful, and embody the spirit of those they replace. After the death of Raila Odinga, that expectation fell squarely on the shoulders of his elder brother, Oburu Odinga

But what was meant to be a seamless transition within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has instead sparked ridicule, online satire, and an unexpected meme frenzy

For decades, Raila Odinga popularly known as Agwambo and Baba commanded crowds with unmatched charisma, razor-sharp wit, and electrifying rally performances. His political rallies were theatrical masterclasses, blending ideology with emotion and leaving supporters energized

In contrast, Oburu Odinga’s public appearances have struggled to generate similar momentum

At 82, the veteran politician stepped into a role many believe required not just lineage, but dynamism and commanding stage presence. While party insiders hoped the Odinga name would preserve continuity and calm loyal supporters, critics argue that the transition has exposed a stark contrast in style and delivery

The tipping point came during a rally in Mombasa, where Oburu addressed a modest crowd of ODM supporters. In a moment that quickly went viral, he declared:

“Hatuwezi kukaa bila power! Ni lazima tupate power!”

The clip spread rapidly across TikTok and other social media platforms. Instead of rallying political fervor, the phrase became a comedic audio snippet, remixed and repurposed by users who poked fun at the delivery and tone.

Within hours, “Tunataka Power!” had transformed from a political slogan into a trending meme

Kenyans on social media were swift in their response. Edits, parodies, and satirical commentary flooded timelines, with many contrasting Oburu’s delivery against the fiery oratory once synonymous with Raila.

Political analysts note that in today’s hyper-digital environment, a single speech can define public perception. What might once have been dismissed as an off day at a rally has now become enduring internet fodder

Leadership transitions are rarely smooth—particularly when a successor follows a towering political figure. While Oburu Odinga remains a longstanding figure in Kenyan politics, the expectations attached to the Odinga legacy present a formidable challenge

Whether he can reshape his public image and reconnect with supporters remains to be seen. For now, however, “Tunataka Power!” lives less as a political rallying cry and more as a viral catchphrase in Kenya’s ever-evolving online culture
