Persons with disabilities (PWDs) engaged in sorghum farming in Homa Bay County are set to increase production after receiving a KSh 500,000 donation aimed at promoting climate-resilient agriculture
The funds were donated by Evans Okello, a local casual construction worker, who said the support would help smallholder farmers withstand prolonged droughts and erratic rainfall caused by climate change
“Many of our sorghum farmers, especially PWDs, work tirelessly yet remain trapped in poverty due to unpredictable weather patterns. This support will help them adopt drought-resistant practices, improve yields, and earn a better living,” Okello said

The donation will be used to introduce drought-tolerant sorghum varieties, provide improved farm inputs, and assist in planning farming activities that suit farmers with disabilities
Okello’s contribution comes from part of the KSh 1 million he won through Kenya Breweries Limited’s national Tuzidi Kuinuana campaign for its Senator Keg brand
The campaign rewards consumers with cash prizes intended to enhance livelihoods and support community projects

“This opportunity is not just about winning money. It is about using it to make a meaningful difference in the community,” he added
Okello also plans to invest in his own future by moving from casual labour to starting a construction equipment hire business, including purchasing machinery such as concrete vibrators
“With this win, I can establish a sustainable enterprise and improve my livelihood while empowering local farmers,” he said
