Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno is among six people who died after a helicopter crashed and burst into flames at the edge of Chepkieb Forest in Mosop, Nandi County, on Saturday evening

The aircraft went down at approximately 4:45pm, shortly after attempting to take off from a makeshift landing site near the forest. Witnesses said poor visibility due to ongoing rains in the area may have contributed to the crash

Residents reported that the helicopter had earlier made an emergency landing at around 4:00pm as weather conditions worsened. The pilot was seen speaking briefly with herders near the site while assessing the situation

According to witnesses, the chopper later lifted off but failed to gain significant altitude before crashing into trees a few metres from the take-off point

“The impact was instant and fiery,” said a resident who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. “The chopper burst into flames immediately”

All six people on board, including the pilot, are believed to have died on the spot. The aircraft had reportedly departed from Endebess and was carrying five passengers at the time of the crash

As night fell, debris from the helicopter — twisted metal and charred wreckage — lay scattered along the forest edge

Nandi County Police Commander Samuel Mukuusi confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are underway

“We can confirm that a helicopter crashed in Mosop and six people are feared dead. Investigations are ongoing,” he said

Preliminary reports indicate that documents belonging to an official from the Kenya Forest Service were recovered at the scene. However, authorities have not confirmed whether the official was among the victims

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched investigations into the cause of the crash

By Saturday night, the bodies of the deceased had not yet been retrieved as security teams secured the area pending further examination

Authorities are expected to release additional details once next of kin have been notified and preliminary findings from investigators are made public
