Carrick Takes Responsibility as Manchester United Crash Out of League Cup

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has accepted responsibility for his side's dramatic collapse against Brighton & Hove Albion as the Red Devils suffered another early exit from the League Cup.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has accepted responsibility for his side’s dramatic collapse against Brighton & Hove Albion as the Red Devils suffered another early exit from the League Cup.

United surrendered a two-goal advantage at Old Trafford before losing 3-2 to Brighton in the third round, adding to a difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign.

The hosts made a flying start, with teenage forward Shea Lacey opening the scoring before Mason Mount doubled United’s advantage. The early goals appeared to put Carrick’s side in control, but Brighton gradually turned the match around.

Charalampos Kostoulas pulled one goal back in first-half stoppage time before Pascal Gross equalised in the second half. Maxim De Cuyper then completed Brighton’s comeback, leaving United unable to respond as the visitors secured their place in the next round.

Speaking after the match, Carrick acknowledged that his team failed to maintain the intensity and control they had shown during the opening stages.

The United boss also accepted responsibility for the decisions made on a night when he made eight changes to the team that had started the previous fixtures.

The heavy rotation was partly aimed at managing the squad ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Fulham. However, the changes exposed concerns over United’s squad depth, particularly after Brighton began putting sustained pressure on the home side.

Carrick had enjoyed a positive spell after taking temporary charge of United last season, guiding the club to a third-place finish before being handed the permanent job.

Expectations were consequently raised for the new campaign, with United hoping to build on that improvement and challenge higher up the Premier League table.

Instead, the club has already suffered three defeats in six matches across all competitions, increasing scrutiny around the team’s performances and the manager’s decisions.

The defeat to Brighton was particularly damaging because of the manner in which United lost the match.

After taking a 2-0 lead, Manchester United became increasingly vulnerable as Brighton found space and began creating opportunities. The visitors eventually scored three unanswered goals to complete the turnaround.

The result also created a notable piece of club history. It was the first time in 50 years that Manchester United had lost a home match after taking a two-goal lead. The previous occasion came in September 1976, when Tottenham Hotspur overturned a two-goal deficit at Old Trafford.

United’s latest cup disappointment follows an increasingly difficult period for the club.

The team had already suffered a Premier League defeat to Manchester City before the Brighton match and entered the League Cup encounter under pressure to produce a positive response.

Instead, the loss means Manchester United search for consistency continues.

Carrick now faces the immediate task of preparing his players for Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Fulham, with the team needing to quickly recover from the disappointment.

The manager has also faced questions over the club’s close-season recruitment and whether the squad has sufficient depth to compete across different competitions.

The Brighton defeat has brought those questions back into focus, particularly after the manager chose to make substantial changes to his starting XI.

For Brighton, the victory represents another successful visit to Old Trafford and sends the club into the next round of the League Cup.

For Manchester United, however, the result represents another setback in a season that has started with considerable expectations.

Carrick has accepted his share of responsibility for the collapse, but the focus will now shift to how United respond in the Premier League.

With the League Cup campaign already over, the club will have fewer opportunities for domestic silverware this season, while Carrick and his players will now have to concentrate on improving their league form.

The next fixture against Fulham therefore provides an immediate opportunity for Manchester United to respond on the pitch after a night that exposed the team’s continuing struggles with consistency and game management.
