EACC Investigating 67 Cases Linked to NG-CDF
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has revealed that 67 cases related to the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) are currently under investigation.
According to the commission, the cases involve suspected corruption and mismanagement of the fund, which is meant to support development projects at the grassroots level.
Speaking during a joint workshop for NG-CDF officials from Western Kenya held in Nakuru, EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamud warned that continued misuse of devolved funds is eroding public trust and slowing development.
“As part of addressing this challenge, the Commission has taken up for investigation 67 reports relating to the management of NG-CDF, which are at different stages within the criminal justice system,” Mohamud said.
He noted that the most common forms of corruption linked to NG-CDF include conflict of interest, where officials award themselves tenders through proxy companies, procurement fraud, payment of kickbacks, extortion of contractors before payments are made, money laundering, and embezzlement of public funds.
Other cases involve payments for ghost projects, bursaries for non-existent students, inflated project costs, payments for services not delivered, and diversion of public funds.
Mohamud revealed that one of the cases under investigation involves a private contractor who was irregularly awarded 49 tenders and paid more than KSh 66 million from various NG-CDF committees and the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) across 11 counties within two financial years.
He warned that none of the NG-CDF committees is immune to corruption risks.
The EACC said the workshop aims to equip officers with the knowledge and skills needed to perform their duties with greater accountability as investigations into alleged malpractice continue.
