MP Peter Kaluma Under Scrutiny Over ‘One-Term’ Supporters Remarks in Homa Bay

Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has come under scrutiny following remarks in which he appeared to warn supporters associated with the “one-term” political movement against engaging in political activities in Homa Bay County.

Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has come under scrutiny following remarks in which he appeared to warn supporters associated with the “one-term” political movement against engaging in political activities in Homa Bay County.

The remarks have triggered debate over political tolerance and the conduct of leaders as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election. Kaluma is reported to have warned individuals supporting the “one-term” campaign that they could face consequences if they continued their activities in the county.

In a video circulating online, the legislator is heard addressing the issue of people supporting the political movement and appearing to caution hotel owners against providing accommodation to members of the group. He reportedly said that youths would be deployed to inspect hotels and houses where members of the group were staying.

Kaluma also appeared to take issue with individuals who had previously worked with his political camp but had since shifted their allegiance. He reportedly told those unwilling to support his side to leave, while maintaining that Homa Bay remains an ODM stronghold.

The remarks have emerged against the backdrop of heightened political activity in Homa Bay, where members and supporters of the Linda Mwananchi movement have been conducting political engagements.

The situation became tense after activities linked to the movement were reportedly disrupted by groups of youths. The confrontation raised concerns about the possibility of political competition in the county escalating into clashes between rival groups.

Tensions had also been reported on Saturday evening following an incident at Homa Bay Tourist Hotel. According to reports, a group of youths raided the facility, damaging windows, furniture and other property and allegedly taking away some items. Police officers later visited the scene, although the suspects were reported to have fled on motorcycles.

The incidents have attracted the attention of authorities, with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) condemning the reported disruption of the Linda Mwananchi activities. The commission indicated that it would summon political actors who may have contributed to the heightened tensions.

The remarks attributed to Peter Kaluma have also drawn criticism from political leaders outside Homa Bay. Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina called on security agencies and other relevant institutions to investigate the statements and take appropriate action if they were found to violate the law.

The controversy comes at a time when political temperatures are rising across the country as politicians position themselves ahead of the 2027 polls. Leaders from different political formations have stepped up grassroots mobilisation, public rallies and consultations as they seek to build support for their respective political alliances.

The Linda Mwananchi movement has been conducting political engagements in different parts of the country, bringing together several opposition figures, including Edwin Sifuna, Babu Owino and James Orengo.

The developments in Homa Bay have therefore renewed concerns about the need for political leaders and their supporters to exercise restraint and allow rival groups to conduct lawful political activities without intimidation or violence.

As scrutiny over Kaluma’s remarks continues, attention is expected to turn to the response of security agencies and the NCIC, particularly on whether any investigations or formal action will follow.

The controversy also highlights the increasingly competitive political environment ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Homa Bay emerging as one of the areas where rival political camps are seeking to strengthen their influence.
