Fresh Push for Uhuru-Gachagua Alliance as Political Leaders Converge at Wamunyoro

A series of political consultations at Rigathi Gachagua's Wamunyoro home has sparked renewed debate over the possibility of a political alliance between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and the former Deputy President ahead of the 2027 General Election.

A series of political consultations at Rigathi Gachagua’s Wamunyoro home has sparked renewed debate over the possibility of a political alliance between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and the former Deputy President ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Over the past several weeks, delegations from different parts of the country have reportedly visited Wamunyoro to engage Gachagua on the country’s political future and the formation of a strong opposition coalition capable of challenging President William Ruto’s administration in the next election.

Sources familiar with the meetings indicate that one of the recurring proposals from the visitors has been the need for Gachagua and Uhuru to mend their political relationship. The delegations believe that cooperation between the two leaders could help unite the Mt. Kenya region and provide the opposition with a stronger foundation as campaigns begin to take shape.

The discussions are said to have focused on setting aside previous political disagreements in favour of a broader agenda aimed at bringing together like-minded leaders. Supporters of the proposal argue that a united front would strengthen the region’s influence in national politics and improve the opposition’s prospects in 2027.

Since retreating to his Wamunyoro residence following his exit from government, Gachagua has transformed the venue into a meeting point for politicians, religious leaders, professionals, youth representatives and grassroots leaders. The consultations have largely centred on governance, economic concerns and strategies for building a broad-based political movement.

Even as speculation grows over a possible partnership, neither Gachagua nor Uhuru has publicly confirmed that formal negotiations are underway. However, political observers note that the increasing calls for reconciliation reflect changing political dynamics as leaders begin positioning themselves for the next electoral contest.

Gachagua has previously stated that the opposition’s primary objective is to remain united and eventually settle on a single presidential candidate who can command national support. He has maintained that consultations will continue before key decisions on leadership and coalition structures are made.
