The political contest for the support of Kenya’s Gen Z is already underway, with both government and opposition figures increasingly recognizing that young people could play a decisive role in shaping the outcome of the 2027 General Election.

Following the youth-led protests against the 2024 Finance Bill, Gen Z emerged as a powerful political force capable of mobilizing large numbers of people through social media without relying on traditional political structures. The demonstrations fundamentally changed the country’s political landscape and highlighted a new form of civic engagement driven by digital connectivity rather than party loyalty.

Unlike previous generations, many Gen Z citizens have shown little attachment to established political leaders or parties. Instead, they are focusing on issues that directly affect their lives, including the rising cost of living, unemployment, corruption, government accountability and transparency.

Platforms such as TikTok, X, Instagram and Telegram have become their primary tools for organizing, sharing information and amplifying their voices. This shift has forced politicians to rethink their strategies, as conventional campaign methods may no longer be enough to win over younger voters.

As the anniversary of June 25 approaches, different political groups are increasingly seeking to align themselves with the energy and symbolism associated with the Gen Z movement. Some opposition leaders have openly expressed support for activities commemorating the day, viewing the youth vote as a critical factor ahead of the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, the government has emphasized the importance of maintaining peace while protecting citizens’ constitutional right to demonstrate. Leaders have repeatedly urged Kenyans to exercise their freedoms responsibly and avoid actions that could lead to violence or disrupt economic activities.

However, one of the biggest challenges facing politicians is that Gen Z is not a group that can be easily controlled or politically owned. Many young people reject attempts by politicians to claim ownership of their movement or use it for partisan interests.

This makes Gen Z both influential and unpredictable. Their support is likely to be earned through tangible action rather than political rhetoric. Promises alone may not be sufficient to secure their trust.
