Wetang’ula, Kibwana Among Top Lawyers Recommended for Senior Counsel Honour

This year, 105 advocates applied for the honour

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and former Makueni Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana are among several high-profile legal practitioners shortlisted for conferment of the prestigious Senior Counsel (SC) rank in the 2025 selection exercise

Other nominees include former Solicitor General Kennedy Ogeto, lawyers Patrick Lutta, Ambrose Rachier, Katwa Kigen, and Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Chairperson Ahmed Isaack Hassan

Chaired by Senior Counsel Philip Murgor, the Committee comprises respected figures from the Bar, Judiciary, and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK)

Members include Joyce Majiwa, SC, Ahmednasir Abdullahi, SC, Attorney General’s representative Catherine Ochanda, LSK President Faith Odhiambo, Supreme Court Judge William Ouko, Court of Appeal Judge Gatembu Kairu, High Court Judge Nduma Mathews Nderi, and LSK representatives Chrispine Maondo and Wanjiru Ngige

In a statement, the Committee noted that candidates were selected based on “distinguished legal practice, integrity, and contributions to Kenya’s jurisprudence”

The Senior Counsel rank often referred to as “Silk” is the highest professional recognition bestowed upon advocates in Kenya, reserved for those with outstanding expertise and exemplary service to the legal profession

The date for the official conferment ceremony will be announced later
