Ugandan authorities have confirmed the killing of a self-proclaimed “traditional herbalist” who allegedly led a violent assault on security installations in the country’s western region over the weekend

According to officials, the attacks began on Saturday and targeted police and military posts across Bundibugyo, Kasese, and Fort Portal districts near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The coordinated strike left one civilian and one soldier dead

Security sources said the assailants, armed with submachine guns and machetes, intended to “acquire weapons to start a tribal militia.” The group was reportedly led by Christian Asuman Muganzi, a local herbalist who was using his shrine as a recruitment and indoctrination base

“He was using his shrine at Kakuka to indoctrinate and recruit people to join his criminal group,” said Albert Kaliruga, deputy head of security for the region. “At his shrine, we recovered traditional herbs, fetishes, and other items he claimed could protect his fighters in battle”

Muganzi and more than 20 of his fighters were killed on Tuesday when security forces stormed their hideout in Kakuka, Bundibugyo. Fifteen other suspects were arrested
