Kenya’s road safety situation worsened in 2025, with new data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) showing a rise in fatalities
By December 2, a total of 4,458 people had lost their lives on the country’s roads, surpassing last year’s total of 4,311 recorded by the end of 2024
The statistics highlight the growing dangers faced by all road users. Pedestrians remain the most affected, with 1,685 deaths recorded

Drivers accounted for 403 deaths, while 723 passengers died in various accidents involving private vehicles, buses, and matatus
The high number of passenger fatalities raises concerns over speeding, overloading, and non-compliance with safety regulations in public service vehicles
Motorcycle-related deaths also remained alarmingly high. A total of 1,148 motorcyclists and 432 pillion passengers lost their lives, underscoring the risks associated with boda boda transport

Even cyclists were not spared, with 67 deaths reported this year
As the festive season approaches a period known for increased travel NTSA is urging all road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic safety rules
