IEBC Hits 75% Voter Registration Target as 1.8 Million Kenyans Sign Up Ahead of Deadline

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced significant progress in the ongoing enhanced continuous voter registration exercise, reporting that it has already achieved 75 per cent of its national target ahead of the scheduled closure on Tuesday.
According to the commission’s latest update, a total of 1,876,274 new voters have been successfully registered since the exercise began on March 30. This figure brings the country close to its target of 2.5 million new voters for the current phase of the registration drive.
IEBC further revealed that momentum in the exercise has remained steady in recent weeks, with 505,344 new voters registered between April 17 and April 23 alone. The commission described this as a strong uptake, particularly as the deadline draws nearer and awareness efforts intensify across the country.
At the county level, Nairobi continues to lead in voter registration numbers, recording more than 209,000 new voters. Kiambu County follows with approximately 97,000 registrations, while Nakuru County has so far recorded about 81,000 new voters. These three counties account for a significant portion of the overall national total, reflecting their large populations and high urban activity.
Other counties that have also recorded relatively high numbers include Kakamega, Machakos, and Bungoma, all of which continue to show strong participation in the exercise.
However, the commission noted that some counties have recorded lower turnout figures. Lamu County registered the lowest number of new voters at 8,345.
Isiolo and Mandera also reported comparatively low registration numbers. In contrast, counties such as Homa Bay, Kisumu, Siaya, and Nyamira posted moderate figures, each registering between 33,000 and 40,000 new voters.
IEBC Assures Continued Registration After Deadline
IEBC has emphasized that despite the upcoming deadline for the enhanced phase of the exercise, voter registration will not completely come to a halt.
Eligible Kenyans will still be able to register at designated Huduma Centres, constituency IEBC offices, and at the commission’s headquarters located at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi.
The commission continues to urge eligible citizens who have not yet registered to take advantage of the remaining days, noting that voter registration is a key step in strengthening democratic participation ahead of future elections.
