Upper Hill School in Nairobi has temporarily sent students home following concerns over unrest, becoming the latest institution affected by a growing wave of disturbances in schools across the country.

In a notice issued to parents and guardians, the school’s administration directed families to pick up their children, citing emerging signs of restlessness within the institution and the need to prioritize student safety. The management said the move was purely precautionary and aimed at preventing any potential escalation of tensions.

The development comes at a time when several secondary schools have reported incidents of unrest, prompting administrators to take measures to safeguard learners and school property. Education stakeholders have expressed concern over the increasing number of disturbances being reported in learning institutions in recent weeks.

Upper Hill School joins a growing list of schools that have either suspended learning or released students following security concerns. Some institutions have experienced incidents ranging from student protests to attempted destruction of property, forcing school administrations to intervene.

The recent unrest has reignited debate about student discipline, mental well-being, and the pressures facing learners in Kenyan schools. Parents and education experts have called for deeper investigations into the root causes of the disturbances and the implementation of long-term solutions.Image

Despite the incidents reported in a number of schools, the Ministry of Education has maintained that learning continues normally in the vast majority of institutions across the country. Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok has ruled out an unscheduled nationwide closure of schools, emphasizing that only a small number of institutions have been affected by the unrest.

The ministry has instead opted for targeted interventions in affected schools while monitoring the situation closely. Officials say efforts are underway to ensure that learning resumes smoothly in institutions where disruptions have occurred.

Parents of Upper Hill School students are now awaiting further communication from the administration regarding when learners will return to class and the measures being put in place to guarantee their safety.
