The movement’s leaders met Registrar of Political Parties John Cox Lorionokou on Tuesday to challenge the decision that blocked the registration of the proposed Linda Mwananchi Party of Kenya (LMPK). The Registrar had earlier declined the application, arguing that the proposed name closely resembled existing political party names and slogans and could conflict with provisions of the Political Parties Act.
Speaking after the meeting, Suba South MP and Linda Mwananchi Movement spokesperson Caroli Omondi described the discussions as positive and said the Registrar had committed to reconsidering the matter before issuing a final decision later this week.
Omondi expressed confidence that the concerns raised by the Registrar could be resolved through further engagement, insisting there was no legal basis for permanently rejecting the proposed party name.
He said the movement remains committed to following all legal procedures required to become a fully registered political party ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The Linda Mwananchi Movement has been seeking official recognition as a political party as it positions itself to play a greater role in the country’s opposition politics. Its leaders believe securing the party name is a critical milestone before completing the remaining registration requirements.
According to Omondi, the movement is optimistic that the Registrar will reverse the initial decision after reviewing the issues discussed during the meeting.
The attempt to register the party comes at a time when Kenya’s opposition is undergoing significant political realignments, with various leaders exploring new alliances and platforms in preparation for the next general election.
The Linda Mwananchi Movement has emerged as one of the voices critical of the Kenya Kwanza administration and has attracted support from several prominent opposition figures. The movement has consistently advocated for constitutional governance, accountability, and greater public participation in national leadership.
If the Registrar approves the reservation of the name, the movement will proceed with the next stages of registration, including meeting the legal and administrative requirements set out under the Political Parties Act.
