Oburu Oginga Urges ODM Leaders to Shun Early Campaigns, Calls for Unity and Fair Primaries

ODM party leader Oburu Oginga has cautioned party officials against engaging in premature campaigns, urging them instead to uphold fairness in party primaries and maintain a unified voice as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) prepares for the next General Election.

In remarks dated May 4, 2026, and shared with party leaders attending a retreat in Mombasa, Oburu apologized for his absence, citing “unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances.” He assured attendees that he would closely follow the proceedings and encouraged them to develop effective strategies for the party’s future.

Oburu emphasized the need to build on the legacy of the late Raila Odinga, noting that his leadership elevated ODM’s global profile. He urged members to continue advancing the party’s vision, stressing that more work remains to be done.

He also raised concern over low voter registration in ODM strongholds, calling on leaders to intensify grassroots mobilization efforts to strengthen the party’s support base.

On the issue of nominations, Oburu underscored the importance of transparent and credible primaries, insisting that all aspirants must be given equal opportunities to avoid internal divisions.

Additionally, he warned against internal wrangles and conflicting public statements, stressing that the party must operate under a single command structure with a consistent message.

Oburu further clarified that ODM has not yet begun coalition negotiations, cautioning leaders against premature endorsements and urging a consultative approach when the process begins.
