Kisumu City Manager Summoned Over Forged Certificates, Misuse of Public Funds

He is also accused of presenting falsified documents to facilitate travel and allowances for a woman who was not a county employee but accompanied him on an official trip to Lagos, Nigeria, from July 8 to 12, 2024

Kisumu County City Manager Michael Abala Wanga has been summoned by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to appear at its Nairobi headquarters over allegations of forgery, fraud, and misuse of public funds

In a statement on Thursday, EACC confirmed it had received approval from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to charge Wanga with multiple corruption-related offences

The commission alleges that Wanga used forged academic credentials to secure his position as City Manager

He is also accused of presenting falsified documents to facilitate travel and allowances for a woman who was not a county employee but accompanied him on an official trip to Lagos, Nigeria, from July 8 to 12, 2024

The woman was allegedly represented as a staff member of the County Government of Kisumu, leading to irregular use of public funds

“The Commission hereby directs Mr. Michael Abala Wanga, the Kisumu County City Manager, to present himself at EACC Headquarters, Integrity Centre, Nairobi, immediately for processing and arraignment,” EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud stated

Wanga is expected to face four charges: forgery, fraudulent acquisition of public property, uttering false documents, and presenting forged certificates

Investigations began earlier this year after the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) confirmed in a 2022 letter to EACC that Wanga’s primary and secondary school certificates were not genuine

A petition had also been filed calling for his prosecution over the alleged falsification

EACC completed its investigations in March and forwarded the file to the DPP, setting the stage for the upcoming charges
