Shock and grief have gripped Kapnandet village in Belgut Constituency, Kericho County, after three members of one family died in a devastating house fire that occurred in the early hours of Friday
The victims an 80-year-old woman, her 52-year-old daughter, and their 19-year-old house help were burned beyond recognition after the four-bedroomed bungalow they were sleeping in was engulfed by flames under circumstances that remain unclear
According to residents, the trio were asleep in their respective bedrooms when a loud explosion, believed to have originated from a cooking gas cylinder in the kitchen, jolted the household awake
Upon rushing to investigate, family members discovered that the house was already on fire
Villagers raised the alarm, prompting neighbours and members of the public to rush to the scene in an attempt to extinguish the blaze
However, their efforts were hampered by the intensity of the fire, which spread rapidly and consumed the entire house within a short time
The Kericho County government fire brigade later arrived and managed to put out the inferno

Police officers from Sosiot Police Station are expected to brief the media as investigations into the cause of the fire continue
The charred remains of the three victims were recovered on Saturday morning and taken to the Kericho County Referral Hospital mortuary
Authorities have urged residents to observe fire safety measures, particularly when handling cooking gas, as investigations into the tragic incident continue
