Kaguchia Accuses Government of Targeting Journalists After Kiprotich Ordeal

Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia has accused the government of targeting and failing to protect journalists, following the reported abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich and his subsequent discovery in Machakos County.

Kaguchia said the incident raised serious concerns about press freedom and the safety of journalists, urging authorities to ensure media practitioners can perform their duties without intimidation.

Kiprotich was reportedly abducted by armed and masked men along the Gilgil-Nakuru highway on Tuesday night before being found safe near Masinga Dam in Machakos County several hours later.

The incident came months after Kiprotich reported another alleged attempt by armed men to force him out of his vehicle while travelling in Nakuru.

Kaguchia questioned the circumstances surrounding the latest incident and called for a thorough investigation to establish who was behind the abduction.

The legislator said violations of constitutional rights should be condemned regardless of the political affiliations of those involved.

The National Police Service has denied involvement in the incident and directed its Anti-Abduction Unit to investigate the circumstances surrounding Kiprotich’s disappearance.

The case has renewed debate over the safety of journalists and protection of press freedom in Kenya, particularly as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election.
