IG Kanja Faces Possible Sentencing Over Gen Z Protests

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja could face sentencing over allegations that police failed to comply with a court order issued in connection with demonstrations associated with the Gen Z protests.

The matter has been placed before the court following claims that police officers did not fully adhere to directions issued on how demonstrations were to be handled.

The case relates to protests that drew large numbers of young Kenyans onto the streets, with demonstrators raising concerns over governance, taxation and other national issues.

The court had issued orders concerning the conduct of security agencies during the demonstrations. The orders were intended to regulate how police officers would respond to protesters and safeguard constitutional rights during the unrest.

However, the parties challenging the conduct of the police have accused the National Police Service of disregarding the court’s directions.

Kanja has been named in the proceedings in his capacity as Inspector General of Police, with the court being asked to determine whether he should be held personally responsible for the alleged failure to comply with the orders.

The proceedings could have significant implications for the leadership of the National Police Service because contempt of court proceedings can result in sanctions where a court establishes that its orders were deliberately disobeyed.
