Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed recent defections from his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) to the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), claiming those who left were President William Ruto’s “moles” planted to destabilise his party
Speaking on Monday in Kilifi County during a three-day DCP party leaders’ retreat, Gachagua accused UDA of orchestrating a desperate scheme to sow division within his outfit, saying the party is now focused on flushing out disloyal members
His remarks come amid a steady stream of high-profile exits from DCP, with several of his allies abandoning the party for UDA. Gachagua said the departures had not weakened his resolve, insisting the party remains intact despite the losses

The former Deputy President also addressed the defection of Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi, saying the legislator had demanded a direct party nomination an option DCP does not offer
“He wanted a direct ticket and I told him there is no direct nomination. This is a democratic party. Even if you voted against my impeachment, it does not guarantee you a direct nomination,” Gachagua said
He maintained that those leaving DCP were never loyal in the first place, alleging they were agents of UDA. According to Gachagua, the party will stay firm even as some members shift camps

DCP has recently lost several influential figures, particularly in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region. Among those who have exited are Githunguri MP Gathoni wa Muchomba, former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu and Maragwa legislator Mary Wamaua
Meanwhile, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has sparked speculation about his political allegiance after attending a UDA grassroots leaders’ meeting at Sagana State Lodge, a move that unsettled some of his supporters
As the political realignments continue, President Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki have intensified their engagement in the Mt Kenya region, mounting a charm offensive aimed at consolidating support ahead of the 2027 General Election
