Gachagua Alleges Ruto Sold Key State Assets

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked fresh political debate after alleging that President William Ruto presided over the sale of major national assets, including Kenya Pipeline Company and Safaricom.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked fresh political debate after alleging that President William Ruto presided over the sale of major national assets, including Kenya Pipeline Company and Safaricom.

Speaking at a public gathering, Gachagua claimed that the alleged transactions were carried out without sufficient transparency and public participation. He questioned the rationale behind what he described as the disposal of strategic state-owned entities, arguing that such moves could have long-term economic implications for the country.

The remarks have intensified political tensions, with Gachagua calling for accountability and urging Kenyans to demand clarity on the status of the two institutions. He maintained that assets of national importance should remain under public control or be managed in a way that safeguards public interest.

However, the government has not issued any official confirmation supporting the claims. Observers note that both Kenya Pipeline Company and Safaricom remain key pillars in Kenya’s energy and telecommunications sectors respectively, with Safaricom listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange and partly owned by the government.

Efforts to obtain a response from State House were ongoing at the time of publication. Analysts suggest that the allegations, if unsubstantiated, could further deepen political divisions, while also raising concerns among investors and the public.

Economic experts have emphasized the need for clear communication from the government regarding the management or potential privatization of state assets. They warn that uncertainty around such sensitive matters can affect market confidence and public trust.

As the debate unfolds, attention now shifts to the government’s response and whether further details will be provided to clarify the claims made by the former deputy president.
