Fierce Fire Destroys Furniture Workshops in Ngurubani, Mwea

Traders in Ngurubani town are counting heavy losses after a fire completely destroyed four furniture workshops in the early hours of Saturday morning

The blaze, which erupted around 1 a.m., razed the furniture of four business owners. Thankfully, no injuries were reported

Martin Mwaura, a local resident, witnessed the fire while parking his vehicle nearby. “I could not believe my eyes seeing such a huge fire consume the furniture. I immediately raised an alarm, and residents rushed to help, but we could not contain it,” he said

Anthony Mucheke, chairman of the Ngurubani business community, said the traders suffered significant losses and emphasized the urgent need for improved firefighting services in the constituency

“Firefighters had to travel over 40 kilometres from Kerugoya, yet Mwea is the largest constituency by population in the county,” he said

Residents battled the inferno using buckets and water until firefighters arrived around 3 a.m

Mr. Mwaura questioned the preparedness of the county fire brigade, claiming the fire engine arrived empty. “We suspect mechanical problems with the vehicle,” he added

One of the affected traders appealed for assistance, saying the fire had wiped out their livelihoods

Investigations are ongoing, with detectives from Wang’uru Police Station visiting the site near Mugumo area along the Mwea–Embu Highway to determine the cause of the fire
