DCI Warns of Rising Violent Robberies Linked to Online Dating Apps
According to the DCI, many of these meet-ups have ended in violent attacks, robberies, and in some cases, physical harm
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued a warning over a spike in violent robberies targeting individuals who are being lured through online dating platforms and social media
In a statement released on Friday, the agency said criminals are increasingly using dating apps to approach unsuspecting victims both Kenyan and foreign before gaining their trust and inviting them to meet in private or unfamiliar locations
According to the DCI, many of these meet-ups have ended in violent attacks, robberies, and in some cases, physical harm
The agency further noted that fraudsters are manipulating emotional connections formed online to extract sensitive information, including financial details, which exposes victims to additional risks

The DCI urged the public to remain vigilant while interacting with strangers online, especially on dating platforms Users are advised to:

Avoid sharing personal or financial information with individuals they have never met

Watch out for red flags such as inconsistent stories or overly perfect profiles

Verify identities before meeting anyone in person

For physical meet-ups, the DCI recommended selecting public locations such as cafés, restaurants, or shopping malls, while avoiding private residences and isolated places. It also advised informing trusted friends or family members about meeting plans, sharing live locations, and ensuring phones are fully charged
The agency encouraged the public to disengage immediately and seek help if they feel unsafe or notice suspicious behaviour
The DCI reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the public and called for increased caution as online dating platforms continue to grow in popularity
