Church Leaders Urge Action Against Senator Cherargei Over ‘Violent’ Remarks

He went as far as suggesting that Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni should “deal with” such activists and deport them to Kenya “to be finished”

The Church and Clergy Association of Kenya has condemned Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei for issuing what it describes as “unfortunate and unfitting” remarks targeting Kenyan activists during a church service in Kapsabet on November 9, 2025

While addressing congregants, Senator Cherargei warned activists whom he accused of sabotaging regional stability and urged neighbouring heads of state to take firm action against them

He went as far as suggesting that Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni should “deal with” such activists and deport them to Kenya “to be finished”

The association’s national chairman, Bishop Hudson Ndeda, criticised the senator’s remarks, saying they amounted to promoting violence against individuals whose advocacy plays a key role in safeguarding democracy

Ndeda noted that the comments were especially troubling because they were delivered from a church pulpit

According to the association, Senator Cherargei’s refusal to apologise further demonstrated conduct unbecoming of a state officer bound by constitutional principles of leadership and integrity

The clergy argue that the senator’s statements violate Chapter Six of the Constitution, rendering him unfit for office

The association is calling on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the utterances and wants the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to summon the senator for statements they believe could incite violence

They also urged the Senate to consider a censure motion, adding that resignation would have been a more appropriate response given the gravity of the remarks

As the political season draws nearer, the clergy cautioned churches across Kenya to remain vigilant and avoid allowing politicians to misuse the pulpit to spread division or disrupt national unity
