Kalonzo Endorses Mohamed Ali for Mombasa Governor in 2027
Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced that Nyali MP Mohamed Ali will be the United Opposition’s preferred candidate for the Mombasa gubernatorial race in the 2027 General Election.
Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced that Nyali MP Mohamed Ali will be the United Opposition’s preferred candidate for the Mombasa gubernatorial race in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a rally in Mombasa on Saturday, Kalonzo declared that opposition leaders had agreed to hand Mohamed Ali, popularly known as Jicho Pevu, a direct ticket to contest the county’s top seat.
The former Vice President said the decision was reached in consultation with key opposition figures, including Rigathi Gachagua, Eugene Wamalwa and Justin Muturi, describing it as a united push to install new leadership in Mombasa.
Addressing supporters, Kalonzo sought public backing for the Nyali MP, saying the opposition had settled on Mohamed Ali because of his record in fighting corruption and exposing wrongdoing.
“Mimi, kwa niaba ya wenzangu natangaza kwamba Mohamed Ali alias Jicho Pevu, tutampa tikiti ya Wiper Patriotic Front, achukue kiti,” Kalonzo declared.
He said Mohamed Ali’s reputation as an anti-corruption crusader made him a strong candidate to lead the coastal county, adding that the opposition coalition was fully behind his bid.
Kalonzo praised the legislator’s background in investigative journalism, saying his long-standing role in exposing graft and holding public officials accountable had earned him credibility to seek higher office.
Before joining politics, Mohamed Ali rose to national prominence through investigative reporting that spotlighted corruption and governance failures, a profile that helped propel him into elective politics.
Opposition Signals Early 2027 Political Realignments
The endorsement is being seen as an early sign of political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition leaders beginning to line up candidates in strategic counties.
Mombasa is expected to be a major political battleground, and the opposition appears keen to build momentum early as it seeks to challenge established political dominance in the county.
Kalonzo’s announcement also signals growing coordination within the United Opposition, which has recently intensified joint rallies and grassroots mobilization across the country.
With Mohamed Ali now publicly backed for the governor’s race, attention is likely to turn to how the emerging coalition structures its broader 2027 strategy at both county and national levels.
