Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has pledged that the government will tackle hired goons across Kenya “without fear, favour, or discrimination”
Speaking during the graduation ceremony for chiefs and assistant chiefs at the National Police College, Embakasi ‘A’ Campus in Nairobi on Monday, CS Murkomen condemned recent politically instigated violence in Nairobi, stating that such acts will not be tolerated
“There is a phenomenon in this country where political leaders mobilise goons armed with rungus and machetes
What happened here in Nairobi cannot be condoned. Those responsible will face the law,” he said

CS Murkomen noted that chiefs have increasingly struggled to manage public events, including funerals, due to the rise of hired goons
He confirmed that the government, in coordination with the Inspector-General of Police, is prioritising the crackdown on these criminal elements in the coming months
He also praised the newly graduated officers, highlighting their decades of service, often without formal training since 1997“
Chiefs are multipurpose officers who assist in farmer registration, support health promotion, handle conflicts, and are among the most trusted public servants in the country,” Murkomen said

The training program, which has trained 5,892 chiefs and assistant chiefs since August, covered governance, human rights, conflict resolution, security management, and national threats such as gender-based violence (GBV), sexual offences, drug and alcohol abuse, banditry, and terrorism
Murkomen described the officers as frontline heroes, noting that some have been abducted or killed in the line of duty. He emphasised their role in combating GBV and protecting vulnerable youth, working closely with the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA)
President William Ruto presided over the ceremony, recognising chiefs and assistant chiefs as vital pillars for maintaining law and order and promoting peace within communities
The government launched the first cohort of 1,000 officers from all 47 counties on August 15, 2025, as part of efforts to strengthen public service delivery and enhance security nationwide
