Voting has begun in Emurua Dikirr Constituency in Narok County, as well as Porro Ward and Endo Ward in Samburu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, where by-elections are being conducted under the supervision of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Polling stations opened early in the morning, with voters streaming in to elect new representatives following vacancies caused by the deaths of elected leaders. IEBC confirmed that the exercise will continue until 5:00 pm, adding that any voters still on the queue at closing time will be allowed to cast their ballots.
In Emurua Dikirr, residents are voting to replace the late Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno, whose seat became vacant following his death in a helicopter crash earlier in the year. The constituency has drawn significant political attention, with several candidates competing to succeed him.
At the ward level, Porro Ward is holding a vote to replace the late MCA Patrick Lerte, while Endo Ward in Elgeyo Marakwet is also conducting a similar exercise following the death of MCA Jeremiah Biwott.
IEBC has deployed election officials, voting materials, and security personnel across the affected areas to ensure a smooth and orderly process. The commission has assured voters of adequate preparations and emphasized its commitment to a credible and transparent election.
Security agencies have also been stationed in key polling centres to maintain peace and prevent any incidents of disruption during the voting exercise. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and conduct themselves peacefully throughout the day.
The electoral body has called on voters to strictly follow polling guidelines, cooperate with election officials, and avoid any activities that could interfere with the process. Political agents and candidates have also been reminded to respect electoral rules.
IEBC expressed confidence that the by-elections will be conducted fairly and efficiently, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
