Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki Elected Vice-Chair of Council of Governors

In his acceptance speech, Governor Njuki expressed gratitude and vowed to uphold the integrity of the office while advancing the Council’s agenda

Naivasha, Kenya  19 November 2025 – Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has been unanimously elected Vice-Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG), filling the vacancy left by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga

The election took place during a full council session on Wednesday in Naivasha, Nakuru County. CoG Chairperson and Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi announced Njuki’s elevation immediately after the meeting. The unanimous vote reflected strong support from fellow county governors

In his acceptance speech, Governor Njuki expressed gratitude and vowed to uphold the integrity of the office while advancing the Council’s agenda

“It is with a heart full of profound gratitude and deep humility that I accept the immense trust you have placed in me to serve as the Vice-Chairperson of this distinguished body. I pledge to uphold the integrity of the office and work collaboratively to advance the agenda of the Council,” Njuki stated

The vice-chair position had been vacant since 22 October, following Governor Kahiga’s resignation. Kahiga stepped down after public backlash over controversial remarks he made about the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, suggesting that his death “benefited Mt Kenya’s political interests

” The comments were widely condemned as insensitive and politically inflammatory, leading to calls for his removal

In a statement after resigning, Kahiga apologised, noting that his remarks were personal and did not reflect the Council’s position

Governor Njuki now takes on the role at a crucial time as the Council continues to address regional development and governance issues across Kenya
