Tanzania Frees Kenyan Officers and Civilians After Border Detention

Tanzanian authorities have released two Kenyan police officers and three civilians who were detained at the Horo‑Horo One‑Stop Border Point (OSBP) near the Kenya–Tanzania frontier

The group, including Police Constables Patrick Kithinji and Ahmed Ali from Tononoka Police Station in Mombasa, along with Mzee Mwinyi, Sophia Menza Mbogo and Abdikadir Adan, were arrested on January 6, 2026

Initial reports indicated the officers had crossed into Tanzania in pursuit of a suspect, Omar Ali, wanted over an alleged offence of obtaining money by false pretence in Tononoka, Kenya

At the time of their detention, Tanzanian authorities confiscated the officers’ firearms  two Ceska pistols each loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition  and a government vehicle belonging to Kenya’s Department of Water Development

The release follows joint engagements between officials from both countries, although the seized weapons and vehicle remain held at Lungalunga Police Station in Kwale County pending further internal action by Kenyan police

The incident highlights ongoing sensitivities around cross‑border law enforcement cooperation between Kenya and Tanzania
