Eliud Owalo, who until recently served as Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Delivery and Government Efficiency in President William Ruto’s administration, has resigned with immediate effect after declaring his intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 general election
Owalo publicly announced his presidential ambitions on January 11, 2026, during an event commemorating the 106th anniversary of his grandfather at the Nomiya Church headquarters in Oboch, Siaya County

He said his decision to vie for Kenya’s top office made it untenable to continue in his government role, prompting his resignation
In a statement on social media, Owalo wrote that following his declaration, “my position as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Delivery and Government Efficiency is no longer tenable” and that he had stepped down immediately
The move marks a significant shift for the long-time political player, who has held various roles including Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication and the Digital Economy

By stepping away from State House, Owalo becomes one of the earliest figures from within the Executive to formally announce a bid to challenge the incumbent president
His presidential ambitions have already drawn reactions from political rivals, with some dismissing the bid as unlikely to gain traction without strong party backing
