Kenya Launches Advanced Bronchoscopy Training at KNH to Boost Respiratory Care

The three-day specialist training, developed in collaboration with the University of Nagasaki and the Ministry of Health, introduces modern bronchoscopy technology to Kenyan clinicians

Kenya has rolled out a state-of-the-art Bronchoscopy Training Programme at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to strengthen the country’s capacity in diagnosing and managing lung diseases

The initiative, officially launched on Tuesday by Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, aims to equip healthcare professionals with advanced skills in respiratory care

The three-day specialist training, developed in collaboration with the University of Nagasaki and the Ministry of Health, introduces modern bronchoscopy technology to Kenyan clinicians

The programme focuses on improving early detection and precise treatment of illnesses such as Tuberculosis (TB), Pneumonia, Asthma, and Lung Cancer, which affect thousands of Kenyans annually

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Oluga emphasized the importance of strengthening diagnostic capacity to improve patient outcomes

“This initiative prioritizes hands-on training and mentorship for doctors, nurses, and technologists,” he said. “It aligns with our commitment to developing a skilled and well-distributed health workforce under Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage agenda”

Kenyatta National Hospital, which is hosting the programme, is positioning itself as a regional centre of excellence in pulmonary care

Officials said the initiative will not only expand specialist training but also support local research in respiratory health, advancing Kenya’s ability to tackle lung diseases effectively

The launch event brought together key stakeholders, including Dr. Richard Lesiyampe, Acting CEO of KNH; H.E. Hiroshi Matsuura, Ambassador of Japan; and Prof. Keitaro Matsumoto from Nagasaki University

Dr. Oluga thanked international partners for their support and encouraged trainees to leverage the programme to enhance patient care and contribute to a healthier Kenya
