Ruto Commissions Sondu‑Homa Bay‑Awendo Transmission Line, Boosts Power Reliability in Nyanza
In a statement shared on his official channels, President Ruto said the newly completed line will significantly improve the reliability of power supply, lighting up homes and helping to stimulate local enterprises that have long struggled with intermittent outages.

William Ruto has officially commissioned the Sondu‑Homa Bay‑Awendo transmission line, a 76 km, KSh 1.5 billion power project set to deliver more reliable electricity to communities and businesses across the region.
In a statement shared on his official channels, President Ruto said the newly completed line will significantly improve the reliability of power supply, lighting up homes and helping to stimulate local enterprises that have long struggled with intermittent outages.
The project — constructed as part of the national grid enhancement strategy — is expected to ease transmission congestion and reduce pressure on older power lines, which often led to load shedding and unstable supply in parts of South Nyanza and Western Kenya.
He said ”Commissioned the Sondu-Homa Bay-Awendo transmission line, a 76km, KSh1.5 billion project set to deliver reliable power to the region, lighting up homes and boosting local enterprises.”
Energy sector officials noted that the upgraded infrastructure will not only stabilise voltage levels but also support industrial and commercial activities by connecting more households and businesses to consistent power. Improved electricity reliability is seen as a key driver for growth in sectors such as agro‑processing, manufacturing and small‑scale enterprises.
Speaking during the commissioning event in Homa Bay County, President Ruto emphasised the government’s commitment to delivering development projects that directly impact citizens’ daily lives. “This transmission line will ensure that families and businesses enjoy dependable electricity, which is essential for economic growth and improved quality of life,” he said.
County leaders and residents present welcomed the project, highlighting its potential to enhance services in health facilities, schools and enterprise hubs across the region.
The successful completion and commissioning of the Sondu‑Homa Bay‑Awendo line mark a milestone in the government’s wider efforts to strengthen Kenya’s energy infrastructure and support equitable regional development.
