Ruku Blames Gachagua and Uhuru for Undermining Mt Kenya’s Promise to Back Ruto for Two Terms

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of leading efforts that have caused divisions within the Mt Kenya region over its political commitment to support President William Ruto for two constitutional terms.

Speaking after attending a Sunday service at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cathedral in Meru Town, Ruku said leaders from the Mt Kenya region had campaigned across the country during the 2022 General Election, assuring Kenyans that once Uhuru Kenyatta completed his constitutionally mandated two terms, the region would fully support William Ruto to serve his own two five-year terms.

He questioned why some of those same leaders were now urging residents to abandon the President before the completion of his first term.

Ruku argued that the recent political messaging from Uhuru and Gachagua portrays the Mt Kenya region as unwilling to honour commitments made to the rest of the country.

According to the Cabinet Secretary, such a perception risks damaging the region’s political credibility and reputation for keeping its word.

The CS further accused the two leaders of promoting what he described as misleading claims that the Kenya Kwanza administration had neglected the Mt Kenya region.

He dismissed the allegations, insisting that the government continues to implement development projects across the region and that many senior positions in government are currently held by leaders from Mt Kenya.

Ruku also defended Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, alleging that he has been subjected to sustained political attacks by some leaders aligned with Gachagua.

He maintained that such criticism was intended to create divisions within the region instead of promoting unity and development.

According to Ruku, Mt Kenya East remains firmly behind the Kenya Kwanza administration and will continue supporting President Ruto’s development agenda.

He said the region’s priority is to ensure government programmes continue benefiting residents rather than engaging in prolonged political confrontations.

The Cabinet Secretary also dismissed attempts to frame Gachagua’s impeachment as a regional issue, saying the former Deputy President was removed from office through a constitutional process after Parliament and the Senate considered the matter.

He urged political leaders not to use the impeachment to divide communities or create unnecessary political tension.

His remarks come amid heightened political activity in the Mt Kenya region, where rival camps have intensified campaigns ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The region remains one of Kenya’s most influential voting blocs, making it a key battleground as both the government and opposition seek to consolidate support.

Ruku called on residents to remain united and focus on development, arguing that political differences should not derail government programmes or regional progress.

He reiterated that the promise made to support President Ruto for two terms should be respected, adding that leadership should be guided by integrity, consistency, and the commitments made to the Kenyan people.
