Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has praised 22-year-old environmentalist Truphena Muthoni, who is attempting to set a new Guinness World Record by hugging a tree for 72 hours in Nyeri County
Muthoni, a climate activist known for promoting reforestation and youth-led conservation efforts, began the challenge outside the Nyeri Governor’s office
The rules allow her to adjust her position and move around the tree, but she must maintain constant physical contact. Fellow activists have been playing music to keep her motivated, as supporters gather in shifts to cheer her on
Nyeri Governor Kahiga Mutahi has also been among those monitoring her progress

On Wednesday, December 10, Gachagua added his voice to the growing support for the young environmentalist. Sharing her photo online, he commended Muthoni for using the challenge to raise awareness about climate change and mental health
“Push on, my daughter. I strongly encourage you in your conservation resolve not only to break your record in the Guinness World Records for hugging a tree but also to create awareness about environmental conservation and the mental health challenges associated with it,” Gachagua said
He further noted that Muthoni’s determination serves as a reminder that the world must take better care of the environment and pay attention to mental wellness
Kenyans expressed a wide range of opinions on Muthoni’s challenge, with some praising her courage and others questioning the significance of the record

The trip will be extended to one parent or guardian once she completes the challenge
