Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has refuted claims that he stated his party would capture all political seats in Nairobi, accusing media outlets of twisting his remarks
Speaking at DCP headquarters during the unveiling of newly elected county assembly members from the November 27 by-elections, Gachagua clarified that he was referring to the united opposition as a whole, not DCP alone
“I want to ask the media to be responsible and stop open bias. On Sunday, I said DCP is in talks with Wiper and the united opposition
We assessed Nairobi’s political landscape, party loyalties, and performance, and concluded that the united opposition can take 16 out of 17 parliamentary seats,” he said. He further claimed the coalition could secure 65 out of 75 ward representative seats

Gachagua also dismissed claims that DCP candidates would only come from the Kikuyu community. “DCP is a national party
Whoever is given the DCP ticket, it doesn’t matter what community they come from. Once they have the ticket, we all support them,” he said
He urged critics to stop targeting the Kikuyu community, emphasizing that they are part of Kenya and will work alongside others in the united opposition
The DCP leader singled out media outlets, including Taifa Leo, The Star, and Citizen TV reporter Stephen Letoo, accusing them of biased reporting
He alleged that Letoo’s coverage of a church incident during the weekend was misleading, and suggested personal political ambitions may have influenced the reporting

On Nairobi politics, Gachagua claimed that in past elections, contests were mainly between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and UDA. With shifting alliances, he asserted, the united opposition now has a stronger foothold in the city
In a related allegation, Gachagua claimed that ODM leaders, including Suna East MP Junet Mohammed and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, have effectively “sold” the party to President William Ruto, receiving down payments in the deal
He warned that ODM risks becoming a minority party confined to Luo Nyanza if such arrangements continue
Gachagua’s comments come amid heightened political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general elections, with both DCP and other opposition parties positioning themselves for Nairobi’s competitive political landscape
