PS Ouma Oluga Inspects Cancer Centres in Kisii and Kisumu to Boost Oncology Services

During his visit to Kisii County, Dr Oluga toured the Cancer Centre of Excellence, noting that the facility is expected to significantly enhance regional cancer management once operational. He said the centre will help lower treatment costs and improve access to quality cancer care for residents in the region

The Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr Ouma Oluga, has conducted an inspection tour of ongoing cancer care projects in Kisii and Kisumu counties as part of government efforts to expand access to specialised oncology services and reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for treatment

During his visit to Kisii County, Dr Oluga toured the Cancer Centre of Excellence, noting that the facility is expected to significantly enhance regional cancer management once operational. He said the centre will help lower treatment costs and improve access to quality cancer care for residents in the region

In Kisumu County, the PS assessed progress at the Cancer Care Centre currently under construction at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital. He observed that the facility will play a crucial role in addressing the high cancer burden across the wider Nyanza region by bringing specialised services closer to patients

Dr Oluga also revealed that the Ministry of Health plans to strengthen oncology training through a partnership with King’s College London. The collaboration aims to build local expertise, enhance service delivery, and ultimately improve patient outcomes in cancer care

The inspection tour was attended by Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications Stephen Isaboke, Kisii Deputy Governor Elijah Obebo, Lord Graham Lord, Dr Joshua Clinton Ombiri, as well as senior officials from both the national and county governments

The government has prioritised the decentralisation of cancer services as part of broader health sector reforms aimed at improving access to specialised treatment across the country
