Migori Senator Eddy Oketch has withdrawn a controversial motion that sought to de-whip and expel Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, choosing instead to pursue dialogue through alternative dispute resolution mechanisms
In a letter dated January 6, 2026, Aguko, Osman & Company Advocates, acting on behalf of Senator Oketch, confirmed the withdrawal of the motion that had been filed a day earlier
The decision, the lawmaker said, followed extensive consultations with the party leadership, including ODM party leader and Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga

The advocates cited the legacy of the party’s founding leader, the late Raila Odinga, as central to the shift in approach, noting his long-held belief in dialogue as the preferred method of resolving disputes, even in the face of sharp internal disagreements
Despite pulling back the motion, Senator Oketch maintained that there were legitimate concerns regarding Senator Sifuna’s conduct
The letter referenced alleged breaches and what it described as offensive remarks made by the Nairobi Senator against the party and its members

Rather than pursuing punitive measures, ODM will now rely on Article 16(1)(g) of its Constitution, which empowers the party leader to facilitate amicable dispute resolution through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms
The party leadership has been urged to exercise these powers to safeguard unity and address grievances raised by members
The move signals a de-escalation of rising internal tensions within the opposition party, with ODM’s leadership opting for reconciliation over disciplinary action against one of its most outspoken figures
