The Ministry of Education has called for heightened caution on Kenyan roads following the death of two teachers and a learner in separate road accidents that occurred on Saturday, January 31, 2026, in Nairobi and Nyeri counties
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the ministry is coordinating with several government agencies to respond to the incidents and support affected families
The agencies include the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), and the respective county governments

In Nairobi’s Ngara area, a public service vehicle rammed into teachers who were participating in union elections at City Primary School. One teacher died at the scene, while another later succumbed to injuries in hospital. At least 26 other teachers were injured and taken to various health facilities across the city
Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred as teachers were leaving the school compound. One teacher who witnessed the incident said the vehicle lost control and hit people standing by the roadside, causing panic and chaos
Another witness described scenes of injured victims lying on the ground as colleagues and bystanders attempted to help before ambulances arrived
In a separate incident in Nyeri County, a learner was killed after a school van carrying 25 pupils from Mahehe Friends Academy and Aberdare Academy lost control on a bend and overturned. The learner died while receiving treatment in hospital, while other injured pupils were rushed to nearby health facilities
