Kericho Senator Urges Government Action to Quell Tensions in Kisumu-Kericho
Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot has called on the Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Professor Kithure Kindiki, to convene an emergency meeting to quell the violence in the Sondu area of Kisumu County.
The Kericho Senator stated that a council meeting between leaders and the feuding communities in the region would help ease the tension in the area bordering Kisumu and Kericho counties.
Additionally, he urged the Cabinet Secretary and the Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome, to reassign all officers in the area due to their negligence and failure to quell the violence.
“It’s surprising that officers have been silently watching as rival groups engage in brutal clashes without taking any action to restore peace, protect lives, and property,” Senator Cheruiyot said.
“Officers are to blame for failing to utilize intelligence information regarding plots and retaliatory attacks from both sides. Action must be taken. Violence has no place in our society. I urge all groups and communities to reject any form of incitement to violence and embrace unity.”
He called on leaders from the region to refrain from making inciteful statements, stating that “celebrating violence, playing victim, and inciting tribalism will not help the situation.”
His statement comes as at least seven people were reported killed within a 24-hour period, as armed gangs armed with machetes and spears crossed from Kericho and attacked residents at the Sondu market before disappearing with livestock.
