Kenya Power Restores Electricity After Hours-Long Nationwide Blackout

Kenya Power has confirmed that electricity supply has been fully restored across the country following a nationwide blackout that left millions of homes, businesses, and institutions without power for several hours on Wednesday night.

The utility company announced the successful restoration of electricity on Thursday morning, bringing relief to customers who had experienced widespread disruptions. Although power has been restored, Kenya Power has not yet disclosed the exact cause of the outage, saying investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The blackout affected multiple regions simultaneously, including Nairobi, the Coast, the Mt. Kenya region, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, Eastern Kenya, and parts of the North Eastern region. The unexpected loss of electricity disrupted business operations, transport services, communication networks, and essential public services in many parts of the country.

In Nairobi, large sections of the Central Business District (CBD) were plunged into darkness, forcing many businesses to suspend operations earlier than usual. Shopping malls, restaurants, supermarkets, and entertainment venues were among the establishments affected, with some relying on backup generators to continue serving customers. Several traffic intersections also experienced temporary disruptions as traffic lights went off, forcing police officers to manually direct vehicles to ease congestion.

Hospitals, airports, and other critical facilities switched to standby generators to maintain essential services during the outage. Mobile network providers and internet service companies also experienced intermittent service interruptions in some areas due to the prolonged power failure.

Kenya Power engineers immediately launched restoration efforts after the outage was reported. Electricity was gradually restored in different parts of the country throughout the night. Some customers regained power before midnight, while others had to wait until the early hours of Thursday morning before electricity supply was fully reinstated.

In a statement issued after power was restored, Kenya Power apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused by the prolonged interruption. The company thanked consumers for their patience as technical teams worked around the clock to restore normal operations safely and efficiently.

The utility assured the public that its engineers remain on high alert as they continue to monitor the national grid to ensure stability and prevent further interruptions. Kenya Power also pledged to provide more information once investigations into the incident are completed and the root cause of the nationwide blackout is established.

The latest outage has once again raised concerns about the reliability and resilience of Kenya’s electricity transmission and distribution network.
