Court Ruling Clears the Way for Promotions
The promotions follow a Court of Appeal judgment delivered on October 16, 2026, which dismissed appeals by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) and the Law Society of Kenya over the management of uniformed police officers.
The three-judge bench, comprising Justices Patrick Kiage, Jamila Mohammed and Jessie Lesiit, upheld the position that the Inspector-General has independent command over the recruitment, management and promotion of uniformed police officers.
Following the court decision, the National Police Service approved promotions for 1,948 officers. Of these, 300 officers received promotion letters in the initial phase, including 85 senior officers and 215 junior officers.
The wider exercise is expected to support leadership restructuring and operational preparations ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kanja has urged promoted officers to demonstrate professionalism, integrity and accountability as they take on greater responsibilities within the service.
