Heavy Rains Disrupt Kenya Airways Flights in Nairobi, Some Diverted to Mombasa
Heavy overnight rains across parts of Nairobi have disrupted several flights operated by Kenya Airways, with some aircraft diverted to Mombasa due to poor weather conditions.
In a customer advisory issued Saturday, the airline said the downpour affected scheduled operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, leading to delays and changes to flight schedules.
“The heavy overnight downpour in parts of Nairobi and its environs caused disruption to some of our scheduled flights,” the airline said.
It added that adverse weather conditions forced several aircraft to divert to Mombasa, with the disruptions also affecting some flights scheduled for Saturday.
The national carrier warned passengers departing from the country’s main airport that schedules may continue to change as operations gradually return to normal.
Kenya Airways apologised to passengers for the inconvenience caused, noting that the weather-related disruptions were beyond its control. The airline expressed hope that flight operations would stabilise later in the day.
The flight disruptions come after heavy rainfall pounded several parts of Nairobi overnight, triggering flooding that left major roads impassable and stranded hundreds of commuters for hours.
Several low-lying areas experienced significant water accumulation after intense rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems, disrupting traffic and public transport as vehicles struggled to navigate flooded roads.
Public service vehicles were unable to access some routes due to rising water levels, while pedestrians were forced to wade through knee-deep water in some areas.
Earlier, the Kenya Meteorological Department had warned that heavy rainfall would peak in early March, increasing the risk of flooding in several estates and low-lying areas of the capital.
Authorities have urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution and avoid driving through flooded roads as the rains continue. 🌧️🚧✈️
