Health CS Aden Duale Faces Criticism Over Response to Tough Questions From Journalists

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale is under renewed public scrutiny following a series of media engagements in which he has been accused of sidestepping difficult questions on key issues affecting the country’s health sector.

The criticism comes amid growing public interest in the government’s handling of healthcare reforms, Ebola preparedness, and the implementation of the Social Health Authority (SHA).

During a recent press briefing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where the Ministry of Health received medical supplies to strengthen Kenya’s Ebola response, journalists questioned the CS over reports linking a quarantine facility in Laikipia to foreign nationals. They also sought clarification on the country’s designated Ebola isolation centres.

However, Duale maintained that some of the information sought could not be disclosed, citing provisions of the Public Health Act. He told journalists that the ministry would only release information permitted under the law, insisting that protecting public health and national security remained a top priority.

The exchange grew tense after reporters continued pressing for answers, with the Cabinet Secretary maintaining that his responsibility was to protect public health rather than satisfy every media inquiry.

The incident has reignited debate over transparency within the Ministry of Health, with some journalists claiming it has become increasingly difficult to obtain direct responses on matters of public interest.

Members of the media covering the health docket say questions touching on controversial issues, including financing under the Social Health Authority and disease preparedness, are often met with limited responses or referred to other government agencies.

Communication experts say access to timely and accurate information is critical, particularly during public health emergencies, as it helps combat misinformation and strengthens public confidence in government institutions.

The Ministry of Health, however, maintains that it remains committed to transparency while ensuring that sensitive information is handled in accordance with existing laws and established public health protocols.
