Harambee Starlets Seek Redemption in Crucial WAFCON Clash Against Senegal

Harambee Starlets will be aiming to revive their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign when they take on Senegal in a decisive Group A encounter in Rabat on Thursday night.

The Kenyan side enters the match under pressure after suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to tournament hosts Morocco in their opening fixture. The loss left the Starlets at the bottom of Group A, making the clash against Senegal a must-win if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

Harambee Starlets Head coach Beldine Odemba believes her players have recovered mentally from the disappointing opening result and are ready to deliver a stronger performance against the West Africans.

According to the coach, the team’s preparations have focused on rebuilding confidence while refining tactical approaches ahead of what is expected to be another demanding contest.

Odemba acknowledged that Senegal possesses a physically strong squad but expressed confidence that Kenya has thoroughly analyzed its opponents and is capable of matching their style of play.

She noted that one of the biggest lessons from the defeat against Morocco was the need to convert scoring opportunities. Kenya created promising chances early in the match but failed to capitalize before Morocco seized control of the game. The coach emphasized that her players must remain composed, maintain concentration throughout the match, and improve their finishing in front of goal.

The encounter is equally important for Senegal, who also began their campaign on a disappointing note after losing 2-0 to Algeria. As a result, both teams head into Thursday’s fixture searching for their first points of the tournament, knowing that defeat would leave them on the brink of elimination from the continental championship.

Harambee Starlets defender Enez Mango described the match as the most important game of Kenya’s campaign, saying the squad is mentally prepared and determined to secure all three points.

She added that the players understand the physical challenge Senegal presents but insisted the team is ready to compete aggressively while remaining tactically disciplined.

Despite Kenya’s difficult start, Senegal head coach Serigne Mousse has cautioned his players against underestimating the East Africans. He praised the Harambee Starlets for their aggressive approach and acknowledged that Kenya has talented individuals capable of causing problems if given space.
