Garissa Prison Frees 69 Minor Offenders to Reduce Overcrowding

Garissa Medium Prison has released 69 petty offenders to serve the remainder of their sentences through community service, in line with ongoing Judiciary reforms aimed at easing congestion in correctional facilities across the country

The release exercise was led by Kitui High Court Judge Lucy Waruguru Gitari, who urged the beneficiaries to cooperate with local administrators, police, and community members

She warned that anyone who fails to report to their assigned community service stations will be rearrested and returned to prison

Judge Gitari also revealed that 11 inmates were denied release following objections raised by their parents, complainants, community leaders, and local chiefs

Garissa High Court Presiding Judge John Onyiego appealed to community members to support reintegration by accepting the released offenders back into society and avoiding stigmatization
