Testifying before Eldoret Chief Magistrate Dennis Mikoyan, the 76-year-old Professor of Exercise and Sports Science recounted how his driver, Kevin Kipruto Lagat, secretly obtained his M-Pesa PIN and used it to access his bank funds

Kenya’s former middle distance athlete and retired Kenyatta University lecturer, Professor Mike Kipsugut Boit, has taken his former driver to court for allegedly defrauding him of Ksh.1.4 million from multiple bank accounts in Kapsabet and Eldoret

Testifying before Eldoret Chief Magistrate Dennis Mikoyan, the 76-year-old Professor of Exercise and Sports Science recounted how his driver, Kevin Kipruto Lagat, secretly obtained his M-Pesa PIN and used it to access his bank funds

Boit explained that he had trusted Lagat to perform mobile transactions in his presence, unaware that the driver was using the opportunity to gather confidential information

Boit reported the incident at Naiberi Police Station in Ainabkoi Sub-county and recorded a statement. He told the court that he had hired Lagat on a casual basis to drive him from Nandi Hills to Nairobi for work assignments, paying him daily

In a shocking revelation, Boit testified that the driver used a mobile phone registered under the name of a person who had died 15 years earlier to transfer the stolen money

According to court documents, Lagat is accused of unlawfully accessing Boit’s KCB Bank accounts, transferring Ksh.550,304 from one account and Ksh.480,000 from another, with help from accomplices not before the court

The alleged offences occurred between December 23, 2023, and January 27, 2025, in Eldoret City, Uasin Gishu County. Lagat, who is represented by lawyer Tecla Tum, denied the charges

The case has been adjourned to January 26, 2026, for further hearing.
