EACC Arrests Labour Ministry Officials at JKIA Over Bribery Allegations Involving Migrant Workers

The arrests followed an operation conducted on November 30, in collaboration with a travel agent handling 78 migrant workers

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested three officials from the Ministry of Labour stationed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for allegedly extorting travel agents facilitating migrant workers’ journeys to the Middle East

The arrests followed an operation conducted on November 30, in collaboration with a travel agent handling 78 migrant workers

According to the EACC, the agent met the three officers at their booth at JKIA, where they demanded and received a bribe of Ksh. 34,000

The arrested officials Benson Ouma Okello, Esther Njoki Gakuru, and Denis Mariaswere taken to the EACC’s Integrity Centre for statement recording. They were later released on a cash bail of Ksh. 50,000 each, pending further investigations

The move comes after reports emerged that some Labour Ministry officials at JKIA routinely demand bribes for each migrant worker travelling to the Middle East

The EACC has recovered the bribe money from the suspects as part of the ongoing investigation
